My cameras

25 years of shooting in nature and 8 cameras

From 1998 to 2009, my MiniDV cameras

From 2009 to 2012, I move to HDV

From 2012 to 2014, the Panasonic AG-AC 130 AVCHD

From 2014 to 2019, the Canon XA20 in 1080p

Since 2019, finally 4k with the Canon XA40

The difference between rectangular and square pixels is clear between HDV and AVCHD.

In the MiniDV and HDV, the pixels are rectangular, while they are square on a TV. The resolution of the MiniDV and HDV must therefore be extrapolated to 768×576 and 1920×1080 pixels for a correct display on the screen.

In AVCHD cameras, recording clips on SD cards, the pixels are square and no extrapolation is necessary for the display on the TV, hence a sharpness gain that can be significant.

However, there is no longer any way to save edited projects on MiniDV or HDV cassettes and the purchase of large hard drives is necessary. 10 minutes of 4K video requires 16 GB of disk space.
